About this conversation

Every part of a deliberative process has now been offered a technical substitute: recruitment, facilitation, evidence, even the synthesis of what a room concluded. This session brought together four people who build and study those tools, on what they do well, what they quietly do badly, and which parts of the work have to stay human if the output is still to mean anything.

The recording is above, and it is the work: this series publishes the conversation as it happened rather than a write-up of it. What follows is the record of who was in the room and how the session was run.

Participants

  • Alice Siu — Stanford Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law
  • Andrew Stillman — CTO of Braver Angels
  • Professor John Gastil — Distinguished Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences, Political Science and Public Policy at Pennsylvania State University
  • Liz Barry — COO of the Computational Democracy Project

Format

A live online session convened by Deliberation Gateway, held on 12 October 2023 at 6pm EDT, with four guests. The recording is published as it was made.
