Abstract

The starting point of the series: what deliberation is, what sortition is for, and why the two are usually discussed apart. Three practitioners who build and run deliberative processes set out the ground the rest of these conversations stand on.

About this conversation

This is the earliest conversation in the series and the one that sets its terms. Three people who run deliberative processes for a living were asked the plain questions — what deliberation is, what selection by lot is actually for, and why the two are so often treated as separate subjects when in practice neither works without the other.

The recording is above, and it is the work: this series publishes the conversation as it happened rather than a write-up of it. What follows is the record of who was in the room and how the session was run.

Participants

  • Linn Davis — Healthy Democracy
  • Phil Lindsay — Hannah Arendt Center
  • Rahmin Sarabi — Democracy Next

Format

A live online session convened by Deliberation Gateway, held on 30 March 2023 at 6pm EDT, with three guests. The recording is published as it was made.
